چکیده

Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) has a global distribution and is one of the most important post-harvest pests maize (Zea mays L.). Some Mexican races could be novel source resistance against S. to improve commercial maize, generating lines, varieties, hybrids with pest. These are original from center origin have been exposed selection pressure other for thousands years, which probably resulted in some type resistance. We studied focusing on antixenosis, antibiosis, tolerance. Antibiosis reduces survival reproduction insect or prolongs time between generations, whereas antixenosis rate initial successive accumulation population. Obligate-antibiosis free-choice bioassays were performed, those experiments, traits consumption by measured. The resistant accession showed high adult mortality fewer adults 1st generation, where number emerged an ideal trait evaluate level Net (in grams) economically because it indicates gross amount lost store, while yield losses (percentage consumption) allow studying endosperm did influence resistance/tolerance zeamais. flint varieties significantly higher before entering seed, lower quantity first generation obligate-antibiosis bioassay, net percentage both bioassays. In general, Cristalino de Chihuahua, Apachito, Azul levels resistance, Cristalino-079 (flint) (floury) accessions also being tolerant, low Both used breeding programs reduce caused

Resistance of maize varieties to the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

This study aimed at evaluating commonly used maize varieties, collected from Melkasa and Bako Agricultural Research Centers and Haramaya University, Ethiopia, against the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motsch., one of the most important cosmopolitan stored product pests in maize. A total of 13 improved maize varieties were screened for their relative susceptibility to S. zeamais. The Dobie ind...

EVALUATION OF SELECTED INSECTICIDES AS SEED PROTECTANTS AGAINST THE MAIZE WEEVIL, (Sitophilus zeamais M

An investigation was carried out to evaluate the relative toxicity of selected newer insecticides viz., deltamethrin, spinosad, abamectin and emamectin benzoate in comparision with the organophosporus insecticide malathion to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, in an attempt to find out a safer and effective seed protectant. The LC50 values based on bioassay studies indicated that...

Maize (Zea mays L.).

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...

Rearing the Maize Weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, on an Artificial Maize—Cassava Diet

Dry artificial diet pellets prepared with maize, cassava chips, and amino acid supplements (lysine and methionine) were evaluated for mass culture of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a highly polyphagous pest of many stored grains. Evaluation was done in the laboratory at temperature 26 ± 2 °C, 60-70% RH, 12:12 L:D photoperiod. The artificial diet was compounded from ...
